SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Giants: A Fight for AI Protections

SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, has launched a strike against major video game companies, including Activision and Electronic Arts, citing concerns over the unchecked use of artificial intelligence (AI) and fair compensation. This follows over a year of stalled negotiations.

The core issue is the potential for AI to replace human actors by replicating their voices and likenesses without consent. The union isn't against AI itself, but demands safeguards to prevent its misuse and ensure fair compensation for performers. The risk of AI taking over smaller roles, crucial for aspiring actors, is also a key concern.

SAG-AFTRA's Proposed Solutions

To address these challenges and offer temporary solutions during the strike, SAG-AFTRA has created new agreements. The Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA) caters to smaller-budget games ($250,000 - $30 million), offering tiered rates and incorporating AI protections. A side deal with Replica Studios allows actors to license their digital voice replicas under specific terms, including the right to opt out of perpetual use.

Temporary Agreements Details

The Interim Interactive Media Agreement and Interim Interactive Localization Agreement provide further temporary solutions, covering aspects like compensation, AI usage, rest periods, and more. Crucially, these agreements exclude expansion packs and DLC, and projects approved under them are exempt from the strike.

Negotiation Timeline and Union's Stance

Negotiations began in October 2022, with a 98.32% strike authorization vote in September 2023. While progress was made on some issues, the lack of strong AI protections remains the major obstacle. SAG-AFTRA leadership emphasizes the industry's substantial profits and the vital role of its members, vowing to fight for fair treatment and prevent AI exploitation.

Union's Determination

The strike highlights the ongoing tension between technological advancement and the rights of workers in the entertainment industry. SAG-AFTRA's determination to secure robust AI protections underscores the importance of fair labor practices in the face of rapidly evolving technology. The outcome of this strike will likely set a significant precedent for future negotiations involving AI in the entertainment sector.
