Reynolds Pitches R-Rated Star Wars to Disney
Ryan Reynolds has revealed that he proposed an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney, though it remains uncertain whether the idea will be developed.
The Deadpool star shared insights into his non-Marvel endeavors during an appearance on The Box Office Podcast. While he didn't clarify whether Disney greenlit the pitch or whether it would take the form of a film or series, Reynolds did outline his creative vision for such a project.
“I pitched to Disney, suggesting, ‘Why not develop an R-rated Star Wars property?’” Reynolds explained. “It doesn't have to focus on top-tier characters—there are so many others to explore. An R-rating isn’t about being crude; it’s a vehicle for deeper emotional resonance. I’ve always wondered why studios hesitate to take chances on something like that.”

Reynolds brings significant experience with R-rated blockbusters. He played a key role in three of the five highest-grossing R-rated films in history: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. Last year’s collaboration with Hugh Jackman became the highest-earning R-rated film ever, surpassing $1.3 billion worldwide (per Box Office Mojo).
“I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit.“
It's unclear whether that success would extend to an R-rated Star Wars production, but Reynolds confirmed the concept is on his mind. However, he has no plans to appear on-screen.
“I don’t see myself performing in it—that wouldn’t be the right role,” Reynolds added. “I’d prefer to work behind the camera, in writing or production. Franchises like Star Wars thrive on scarcity and surprise. While Disney+ ensures we don’t have scarcity, there’s still room to catch audiences off guard.”

Meanwhile, Reynolds is continuing his involvement with Marvel. While he isn’t eager to integrate Deadpool directly into the Avengers, reports indicate he has been advocating for a Deadpool and X-Men crossover film.
As for Star Wars, it may take some time before Reynolds' idea materializes.
