Analyst Predictions for PS5 Pro Sales Despite Price Increase
PS5 Pro's Enhanced Capabilities Fuel "PS5 Handheld" Speculation
The $700 PS5 Pro's launch is anticipated to mirror the PS4 Pro's sales success, according to Ampere Analysis. Despite a substantial price difference compared to the standard PS5 (a 40-50% increase, significantly higher than the PS4/PS4 Pro gap), Ampere predicts approximately 1.3 million units sold during the November 2024 launch window. This is roughly 400,000 units fewer than the PS4 Pro's initial launch sales in 2016.
Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls notes the price point will likely impact demand, but believes PlayStation enthusiasts will prioritize the enhanced capabilities. The PS4 Pro ultimately sold around 14.5 million units, representing about 12% of total PS4 sales, with projected sell-through of approximately 13 million units within five years. (Sell-through refers to direct consumer purchases from retailers.)
The PS5 Pro's improved GPU will enhance PSVR2 gaming experiences, according to lead architect Mark Cerny. Higher resolution outputs for PSVR2 games are expected, though specific titles haven't been announced. The console's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (AI-assisted upscaling) will also be compatible with PSVR2. Furthermore, the PS5 Pro supports existing PS5 accessories, including the PS Portal.
This PS Portal compatibility has fueled speculation about a potential new portable PlayStation console. Earlier rumors of a PS5 handheld capable of running PS5 games have resurfaced, with the PS5 Pro's advanced features potentially paving the way for such a device. However, no official announcements have been made.
