PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Vexes Gamers
Persistent PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Impacts PS5 Pro Owners
The ongoing scarcity of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives continues to frustrate gamers, particularly those who have purchased the PS5 Pro. Since the PS5 Pro's November 2024 launch, demand for the add-on drive has far outstripped supply. This is largely due to the PS5 Pro's design; unlike its predecessors, it lacks a built-in disc drive, making the separate drive a necessary purchase for those wanting to play physical games.
Both the US and UK PlayStation Direct websites remain consistently out of stock, with available units vanishing rapidly upon restocking. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally offer the drives, these sporadic drops are insufficient to meet the overwhelming demand. The situation is further exacerbated by scalpers, who are acquiring drives in bulk and reselling them at significantly inflated prices, echoing the challenges faced during the initial PS5 launch in 2020. This adds considerable expense to an already premium console purchase.
The lack of an official statement from Sony regarding this shortage is notable, especially considering the company's previous efforts to maintain PS5 production during the pandemic. The PS5 Pro's omission of a disc drive has been a subject of considerable debate since its September unveiling, adding approximately $80 to the console's cost when purchasing the drive directly from Sony. Coupled with scalping activities, this leaves many PS5 Pro owners with little recourse but to wait for improved supply and reduced demand – a prospect that currently seems distant.
