Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: Power Rangers is set to make a thrilling return with a live-action series slated for Disney+. According to The Wrap, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the dynamic duo behind the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, are currently in negotiations to take on the roles of writers, showrunners, and producers for this highly anticipated reboot. This project is being spearheaded by 20th Century TV in collaboration with Disney+.

Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers brand, is aiming to breathe new life into the series. Their goal is to captivate a new generation of viewers while keeping the existing fanbase engaged and excited. This strategic move comes after Hasbro's acquisition of the franchise from Saban Properties in 2018, a deal valued at a whopping $522 million. At the time of the acquisition, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, highlighted the "tremendous upside potential" of the Power Rangers brand, envisioning its expansion across toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment on a global scale.

The original '90s TV show, The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, became a cultural phenomenon, enchanting young audiences with its teenage superheroes and their impressive mechs that could combine into a formidable mega-mech. This nostalgia-packed series is what Hasbro hopes to build upon with their new Disney+ venture.

The decision to reboot the series follows the underwhelming performance of the 2017 Power Rangers movie, which attempted a darker, grittier take on the beloved franchise. Despite intentions to launch a series of sequels, the film's poor box office results led to the cancellation of those plans and ultimately paved the way for Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro.

Hasbro's ambitions don't stop with Power Rangers. The company is also working on other exciting projects, including a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms, which is in development at Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series, also at Netflix, and a cinematic universe for Magic: The Gathering. These ventures underscore Hasbro's commitment to expanding its entertainment footprint and bringing beloved brands to new audiences through innovative storytelling.
