PlayStation PC Port No Longer Requires PSN Account
Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN) account requirement for some PC ports is changing. Starting after the January 30, 2025 release of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on PC, PSN accounts will become optional for several titles.
PSN-Free PC Ports:
This change affects Marvel's Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, and the upcoming The Last of Us Part II Remastered (April 2025). However, games like Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Until Dawn will still require PSN accounts.
Incentives for Using a PSN Account:
While optional, using a PSN account provides benefits: trophy support, friend management, and exclusive in-game bonuses. These include:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Early unlock suits (Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and Miles Morales 2099 Suit)
- God of War Ragnarök: Armor of the Black Bear set and a resource bundle.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points and Ellie skin (Jordan’s Jacket).
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: Nora Valiant outfit.
Sony plans to add further incentives in the future.
Past Backlash and PSN Limitations:
This policy shift follows criticism regarding PSN account requirements for games like Helldivers 2 and God of War Ragnarök on PC in 2024. The limited PSN availability (70+ countries) caused significant issues for players in unsupported regions. Concerns about data privacy and the need for a third-party account also fueled the negative response.
This change reflects Sony's response to player feedback and aims to offer a more accessible experience for PC gamers.
