Mouse Support Revealed in New Patent

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

A February 6, 2025, World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) publication details a Nintendo patent for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, revealing intriguing new capabilities, including potential mouse functionality. This aligns with speculation sparked by the Switch 2 reveal trailer, which briefly showed a controller being moved across a surface, hinting at this feature. The patent largely confirms these earlier predictions, offering more concrete details in the absence of official Nintendo statements.

Enhanced Joy-Cons and New Controllers

The Switch 2 Joy-Cons appear similar to their predecessors, remaining detachable from the console. However, the patent highlights their potential use as a mouse, describing a sensor that detects reflected light to track movement across a surface. The patent also mentions a new charging dock for up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously, and a magnetic attachment with a wrist strap.

Furthermore, the patent introduces a novel controller design: two half-controllers, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse functionality, that can be combined into a single controller via a separate attachment.

It's crucial to remember that the patent details might not fully represent the final product. Nintendo has yet to officially confirm any of these features.

Upcoming Nintendo Direct: Switch 2 Details Revealed

Nintendo of America announced via Twitter (X) on February 5, 2025, that a Nintendo Direct focused on the Switch 2 will air on April 2, 2025, at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET across all official Nintendo social media platforms.

While the Switch 2 reveal trailer indicated a 2025 release, a precise date remains unannounced. For further information on the Switch 2, visit our dedicated page.
