Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed
The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal that the new console is significantly larger than its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con detach from the original Switch, the tablet section expands and transforms into its upgraded form. This substantial size increase indicates that Nintendo is shifting further from the compact handhelds of its past, aligning more closely with larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
But just how much bigger is the Switch 2 compared to its predecessor? While Nintendo hasn't released official size dimensions, we can estimate based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the opportunity to go hands-on with a Switch 2 mock-up by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify its accuracy at the time, the new trailer shows a console that closely matches Genki's design down to the smallest details. Therefore, the measurements we took at CES are likely very close to the final dimensions of the Switch 2.
So, how big is the Switch 2? Let us provide you with a rough, estimated guide.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
By our estimations, the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement reflects the diagonal of the actual display section of the tablet, excluding the bezels, which is the standard for screen sizes. This size aligns with a rumor reported early in 2024. Based on this, **we expect the display to be around 177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If accurate, this means the Switch 2's screen is nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original console's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. This significant increase could make the Switch 2 a visually impressive console, provided the display technology meets high standards.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen makes the Switch 2's display 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area. The Switch OLED, with its 7-inch display, means the Switch 2 will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.
When the Switch launched in 2017, it faced little competition, but now it contends with portable PCs like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and the Steam Deck OLED have 7-inch and 7.4-inch displays, respectively, both larger than any previous Switch console. However, the Switch 2 will still have a larger screen, being 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than the Steam Deck OLED.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
The screen size increase means the console itself is larger. You'd need spacious pockets to fit the original Switch, and the Switch 2 will likely require even larger cargo pants pockets or a bag.
Using a tape measure on Genki’s mock-up at CES, we measured over 10.5 inches from edge to edge, including Joy-Cons, and 4.5 inches from top to bottom. By scaling images from the trailer to match our photos of the mock-up, adjusting them to actual size, and measuring, we believe the Genki mock-up closely reflects Nintendo’s final design. Therefore, the **Switch 2 seems to be approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall**.
For comparison, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall. If our figures are correct, the **Switch 2 is approximately 25% larger than its predecessor**.
These dimensions would make the Switch 2 about 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and roughly 12% smaller than the larger Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).
We couldn't measure the depth of the Genki mock-up precisely, but all indications suggest the Switch 2 will be similar in thickness to the original Switch's half-inch. Thus, while the console's overall footprint is significantly larger, the thickness remains comparable.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The transformation animation in the Switch 2 reveal trailer suggests that the Joy-Con controllers will maintain a similar width to those of the original Switch but will be slightly taller. Using scaled images and our methodology, we estimate that the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons are likely to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original controllers (excluding the slot system), but 13mm taller to match the new console's size. If these figures are correct, the **new Joy-Con are approximately 13% larger** than their predecessors.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
With the Joy-Con size estimated, we can approximate the size of the screen unit. We estimate that the **Switch 2 screen unit is 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is around **31% larger than the original Switch** version.
This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen, likely featuring an approximate 11mm bezel along the sides and an 8mm bezel along the top and bottom. The side bezels are slimmer than the original Switch, with similar top and bottom bezels.
These measurements are estimations based on our best efforts and may differ from Nintendo's official dimensions when released. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we're confident our estimates are in the right ballpark. We expect to see a console that's roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally go hands-on with it later this year.
