Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional feature: the ability to function as computer mice. While the practicality of this mouse mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests included polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles," typically used on the bottom of computer mice, and intended "to stick to game console handles." The presence of "mouse soles" in a potential Switch 2 parts list strongly hints at mouse functionality.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were noted. These numbers aren't listed in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The reported size of 90 x 90mm suggests the tape might cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though trimming would likely be necessary. The legitimacy of this information, of course, remains unconfirmed.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's experimental approach, it's not entirely unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporates this functionality in its right controller, which can be rotated sideways to operate as a mouse. Lenovo even provides a plastic housing to facilitate smoother surface movement.

The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity further strengthens the speculative parallels between the two devices.
