Hori's officially licensed Piranha Plant camera offers significantly lower 480p resolution compared to Nintendo's native 1080p Switch 2 camera. According to the UK My Nintendo Store:
- Official Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: 1080p video capture
- Hori Piranha Plant Camera: 640 × 480 resolution
The budget-friendly Piranha Plant camera, priced below Nintendo's $49.99 offering, launches alongside the Switch 2 on June 5. Users can alternatively choose Nintendo's official accessory or any compatible USB-C camera.
The Piranha Plant camera features unique design elements not found on Nintendo's version. Its webcam module detaches from the plant pot base for direct Switch 2 mounting, enhancing portability. The plant's mouth functions as a physical camera shutter when closed.

The resolution announcement sparked reactions across Nintendo communities:
"How does a 480p camera exist in 2025? That seems more challenging to produce than 1080p," commented Reddit user Ramen536Pie.
"This is comically outdated - maybe they designed this for Wii U originally," joked LizardsoftheGhost.
Pokemonfitness1420 added: "Isn't 480p technologically archaic these days?"
Recent Nintendo Direct presentations revealed the Switch 2's GameChat feature, activated by the new Joy-Con's C button. This system integration enables:
- Cross-game video chat functionality
- Multiplayer screen sharing
- Built-in environmental noise-canceling microphone
Industry analysts suggest this could represent Nintendo's most comprehensive online social system since their first network attempts.
