Nintendo Store Sets Preorder Limits on Switch 2 to Combat Scalpers

Author : Victoria Update : Apr 18,2025

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and is expected to be in high demand. To manage pre-orders effectively, Nintendo has introduced specific measures on the official My Nintendo Store. These measures are designed to ensure that genuine Switch enthusiasts get their hands on the new console.

On the My Nintendo Store, individuals with a Nintendo Account can register their interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 system along with "select accessories." Once your turn comes up, you will receive an invitation email, which is valid for 72 hours. However, to be eligible for this opportunity, you must meet certain criteria: you need to have spent time playing on your existing Switch and be a member of Nintendo Switch Online.

According to the store's fine print, "Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025." These invitations are "non-transferable" and will be sent to the email address linked to your Nintendo Account. Additionally, there's a one-per-account limit on the system and each accessory during the invitation period. You can express interest in either the base Nintendo Switch 2 system or the bundle that includes Mario Kart World.

Once you've placed an order, it will be shipped after purchase, with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo clarifies that "release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times."

These measures seem aimed at ensuring that the Switch 2 is bought by those who intend to use it personally, rather than by scalpers looking to resell it at a higher price online. The issue of scalping has plagued many product launches, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Valve implemented a similar queue system for the Steam Deck, linking purchases to Steam accounts and checking account creation dates, which proved effective. It's not surprising that Nintendo is adopting a similar approach with the My Nintendo Store process.

While there will be other avenues to purchase the Switch 2, this method aims to help long-time Switch owners avoid the chaos typically associated with securing a pre-order on launch day.
