Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues

Nintendo has addressed the compatibility concerns surrounding its newly announced GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2, acknowledging potential "issues" when using it with modern games on the platform. The controller was first showcased during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, where it was specified that it would be compatible only with the Nintendo Switch Online retro library's GameCube games, and not other Switch 2 titles.

Nintendo has since provided further clarification, emphasizing that the GameCube controller is primarily intended for use with GameCube games within the Nintendo Classics collection. While it might be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, users should be aware that there "may be some issues" due to the absence of certain buttons and features found on more contemporary controllers.

In a statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is "designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games." They added, "Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
