Nintendo Classic Heading to New Consoles

Updated ESRB Ratings Hint at Imminent Doom 64 Release for PS5 and Xbox Series X

Recent updates to the ESRB ratings suggest a potential imminent release of Doom 64 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. While neither Bethesda nor id Software have made an official announcement, the updated ratings, listing Doom 64 for these platforms, strongly indicate a forthcoming release. This follows a similar pattern to past ESRB rating leaks, such as the 2023 reveal of Felix the Cat's re-release before its official announcement.

The 1997 Nintendo 64 classic, Doom 64, received a 2020 remaster for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring enhanced visuals and a new chapter. This updated version also launched on Steam. The new ESRB ratings don't explicitly mention a PC release, but given the previous Steam release, a PC port is certainly possible. Furthermore, modding communities have already enabled Doom 64 experiences on PC using classic Doom titles.

The timing of ESRB ratings often precedes game launches by a few months, suggesting a relatively short wait for players eager to experience the N64 classic on current-gen consoles. Bethesda's history of surprise releases for older Doom titles adds to the anticipation, raising the possibility of a stealth launch for Doom 64.

Looking beyond Doom 64, 2025 promises another exciting entry in the Doom franchise: Doom: The Dark Ages. While a precise release date remains unconfirmed, rumors point towards a potential announcement in January 2025. The release of updated Doom classics serves as a compelling prelude to the next installment in this iconic series.
