Rumors are swirling that the popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV), might be making its way to mobile devices. Gaming industry leaker, Kurakasis, claims Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on bringing the expansive world of Eorzea to smartphones.

This wouldn't be Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy titles. However, past attempts, such as Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis and the now-closed Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, have yielded mixed results. Adapting a fully-fledged MMORPG like FFXIV for mobile presents a significant challenge.

It's crucial to remember that this information remains unverified. Square Enix hasn't officially commented on the matter. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent, including discussions in 2018 and 2021 regarding joint projects, lend some credence to the rumor. Yosuke Matsuda, then-president of Square Enix, even mentioned these collaborations.

Kurakasis' leak provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status uncertain. A formal announcement is likely still some time away.

Successfully porting FFXIV's complex mechanics to a mobile platform while maintaining the depth appreciated by its fanbase will be a considerable undertaking. A simplified, compromised version could disappoint dedicated players.
