Metroid Prime 4, Announced Back in 2017, Has Pre-Orders Cancelled by Amazon
Amazon Cancels Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Pre-orders; 2025 Release Still Planned
Amazon is refunding pre-orders for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, notifying customers via email that pre-orders are cancelled due to unavailability. This news, reported across various online forums on January 11, 2025, has caused some concern among fans.
Amazon assures customers that refunds for the cancelled pre-orders will be processed within one to two business days. While disappointing for those who pre-ordered, particularly long-time fans who placed orders since the game's 2017 announcement, the cancellation does not indicate the game's cancellation. The game remains unavailable for pre-order on Amazon, but its release is still expected.

A Look Back at Metroid Prime 4's Development
Initially announced at E3 2017, Metroid Prime 4's development underwent a significant shift. After initial reports that Retro Studios, the developer of previous Metroid Prime titles, would not be involved, Nintendo later announced a development restart under Retro Studios in 2019. The restart was attributed to the development not meeting Nintendo's quality standards for a Metroid Prime sequel.
A gameplay trailer showcased at a Nintendo Direct in June 2024 revealed Metroid Prime 4: Beyond's 2025 release window and antagonist, Sylux. Nintendo reaffirmed this release window in an early January 2025 news post, suggesting the Amazon pre-order cancellation is an issue of availability, not a delay or cancellation.
The upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2 adds another layer of speculation; whether the game will launch on the original Switch or its successor remains to be seen.
