Keanu Reeves Pitches Constantine 2 to DC Studios, Script Now in Development

Keanu Reeves has shared an exciting update about the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult hit, Constantine. In a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves confirmed that a pitch for Constantine 2 has been approved by DC Studios, and they are now ready to start writing the script. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’" Reeves stated. This development marks a significant step forward for fans eagerly awaiting the return of John Constantine, the occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics.

Reeves, who gained fame from The Matrix, brought the character to life in the original film, which has garnered a dedicated following over the past 20 years. Despite numerous calls for a sequel and Reeves' own enthusiasm to reprise the role, progress has been slow until now.

While this news is promising, it's important to note that Constantine 2 is not yet a confirmed project in the rebooted DC Universe (DCU). Neither James Gunn nor Peter Safran, the co-chiefs of DC Studios, have mentioned it as part of their future plans. Thus, the film remains on the edge of becoming a reality.

Reeves also hinted that if Constantine 2 does come to fruition, it will continue in "the same world" as the original movie. He playfully added, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more," suggesting more intense challenges for the character.

This update follows comments from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who told ComicBook in September that a script for Constantine 2 was already in his inbox. However, he admitted to being too nervous to read it, fearing it might not meet his high expectations. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
