James Gunn Confirms: Wonder Woman Movie in Development and Being Written

Author : Chloe Update : Jun 11,2025

James Gunn has officially confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is currently in development, revealing it’s “being written right now.”

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming release of Superman, DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared that this new Wonder Woman film is being developed independently from the previously announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series.

“We're working on Wonder Woman,” Gunn stated. “Wonder Woman's being written right now.”

DC Universe: Every Upcoming Movie and TV Show

View 40 ImagesBeyond the comics, Diana of Themyscira has faced a turbulent few years in other media. Her live-action film franchise starring Gal Gadot lost momentum following the mixed reception of Wonder Woman 1984. Additionally, she has never had a standalone animated series, and her first-ever solo video game was cancelled—despite being announced back in 2021.

As IGN writer Carlos Morales recently noted, "At the peak of the rivalry between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DCEU in the late 2010s, the original Wonder Woman film stood out as one of DC’s biggest cinematic triumphs. Patty Jenkins’ 2017 hit earned widespread acclaim and grossed over $800 million globally. Following the divisive reactions to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Jenkins’ take on Diana resonated deeply with audiences in a way previous DC films hadn't. However, the 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984 fell short of expectations, receiving polarizing reviews and ultimately failing to recoup its theatrical budget."

That film debuted simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters due to audience hesitancy during the pandemic.

Plans for a third film were quietly abandoned, and until now, there had been no update regarding another Wonder Woman feature. Naturally, with a new film on the horizon, speculation will once again arise about who will portray Diana moving forward.

Play*Superman* arrives in theaters on July 11, marking the launch of Gunn’s restructured DC Universe. It precedes *Peacemaker* Season 2, which premieres on HBO Max August 21, 2025. *Supergirl* follows on June 26, 2026, though no release date has yet been set for the *Lanterns* TV series.

Other confirmed DCU projects include Clayface, scheduled for a September 11, 2026 release. Meanwhile, the DCU film The Authority appears to be facing delays. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a Peacemaker spinoff, “has had a couple of setbacks, frankly.” On a more positive note, the HBO Max series Booster Gold “is going pretty strong,” and Paradise Lost remains “slow moving, but it's moving.”
