Insider: MultiVersus is on the verge of shutting down: Warner Bros. fighting game lost 99% of its players
Rumors are swirling that Season 5 of MultiVersus could be its last hurrah. According to AusilMV, a well-known insider for game leaks, a reliable source has hinted that Season 5 is the developers' final attempt to revive the game's fortunes. While it's currently just a rumor, the situation appears to be quite concerning.
When MultiVersus launched in 2022, it enjoyed explosive success, reaching a peak of 153,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, the player base quickly dwindled by 99%, prompting Warner Bros. Games to close the project in June 2023, labeling it an "open beta test." Despite a relaunch in May 2024 with updates, the game has struggled to recapture its initial popularity.
Scheduled to kick off in early February, Season 5 might be the developers' last chance to rekindle players' interest. This season marks a significant relaunch, though the developers have chosen to categorize the initial 2022 release as a "beta." Although the game was warmly received upon its debut, the decision to temporarily shut it down in June 2023, announced in March of the same year, left many players, especially those who purchased the premium edition, feeling frustrated and let down.
