Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

Author : Benjamin Update : Feb 27,2025

Six years have passed since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece, Hollow Knight. Throughout this time, fans have witnessed Silksong's sporadic appearances and disappearances at various gaming events. At one point, Microsoft even seemingly confirmed a pre-June 2023 release. The Game Awards came and went without a Silksong reveal. Could the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the platform for its unveiling?

Fans are optimistic, and it all stems from a picture of a cake. Let me explain.

Sharp-eyed members of the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15th, Team Cherry's co-director, William Pellen, changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a chocolate cake. Pellen tweeted: "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow."

At the time, rumors circulated about a January 16th Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, which proved accurate. Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2, although many questions about the console remain unanswered. Did Pellen subtly hint at the Switch 2 reveal? If so, why?

This is where the Hollow Knight community's speculation intensified. Fans reverse-image searched the cake, tracing it back to a Brooklyn Blackout Cake recipe on Bon Appétit. The recipe's publication date: April 2nd, 2024.

The significance? Nintendo confirmed a Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 for Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. Fans believe Pellen initiated an alternate reality game (ARG) with the tweet and cake image.

The speculation continues. Fans are analyzing Pellen's new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. One compelling theory suggests the "wr" might be part of a longer word, possibly related to a Silksong NPC, the Druid of the Moss Temple. The 15-character handle limit further fuels this theory.

Adding to the mystery, Pellen adopted a new X/Twitter name: little bomey. Fans have noted a resemblance to a Southern Australian wine, but the spelling difference adds another layer of intrigue.

It's important to recall that upon Hollow Knight: Silksong's announcement, Team Cherry confirmed releases on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. However, that was six years ago. Has Nintendo secured Hollow Knight: Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title? Is it a timed exclusive? Or is this simply overzealous speculation from eager fans?

We'll have answers in a few months. Until then, let's review everything unveiled at Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
