Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt has announced that he is taking a sabbatical leave after dedicating 11 years to the Helldivers franchise. In a tweet, Pilestedt shared that he began working on the original Helldivers in 2013 and transitioned to Helldivers 2 in early 2016. He expressed the need to take time off to reconnect with family, friends, and himself, having prioritized the intellectual property over personal life.

Upon his return, Pilestedt plans to shift his focus to Arrowhead's next game project. He expressed confidence in his colleagues at Arrowhead to continue delivering exceptional content for Helldivers 2 during his absence.

Helldivers 2, launched in February 2024, quickly became PlayStation Studios' fastest-selling game, selling 12 million copies within 12 weeks. Its success has led Sony to adapt it into a movie. Pilestedt, who became a prominent figure in the game's community, has been actively engaging with fans on social media, Reddit, and Discord. However, the game's success brought challenges, including increased community toxicity and threats towards the studio's staff.

Before Helldivers 2, Arrowhead had success with the original Helldivers and Magicka. The sequel's launch was marred by server issues, and subsequent updates have faced criticism over weapon balance and the value of Premium Warbonds. The most significant controversy arose from Sony's decision to require PC players to link a PlayStation Network account, a move that was later reversed following a review-bombing campaign on Steam.

In response to the game's success and challenges, Pilestedt transitioned from CEO to chief creative officer at Arrowhead, allowing him to focus more on game development and community engagement. Shams Jorjani, formerly of Paradox and publisher of Magicka, succeeded Pilestedt as CEO.

While details about Arrowhead's next game remain undisclosed, the studio continues to support Helldivers 2 with updates, including the recent introduction of the third enemy faction, the Illuminate.
