God of War TV Series Revamps Creative Team
God of War Live Action Series Reboots As Well
God of War Show Not Canceled
The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant transformation. Recent reports confirm that the series' showrunner, Rafe Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have departed from the project. Despite having developed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have chosen to steer the project in a new creative direction.
Cory Barlog, the Creative Director at Santa Monica Studio, will continue to serve as an executive producer, joined by PlayStation Production's Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang. Amazon and Sony are now on the hunt for a new showrunner, along with a fresh team of producers and writers, to redefine the project's vision. Importantly, the series is not being canceled but is instead being rebooted.
More to Come, Despite the Delays
The collaboration between Amazon and Sony for the God of War TV adaptation was first announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, following the success of the 2018 game reboot. This move is part of Sony's broader strategy to bring their acclaimed video game franchises to the screen, which led to the establishment of PlayStation Productions in 2019. Alongside the God of War series, Sony announced a TV adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn with Netflix, and plans for more adaptations from their extensive catalog of popular franchises.
Sony has already seen success with adaptations like Naughty Dog's Uncharted film in 2022 and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us TV series in 2023, which is set to return for a second season in 2025. Other notable releases include the Gran Turismo film in 2023 and the Twisted Metal TV series this year. Upcoming projects in development include adaptations of Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the recently announced Until Dawn film, slated for release on April 25, 2025.
