Square Enix has launched a dedicated portal honoring Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary. The site confirms they're "planning various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations."

Available anniversary goods include character figurines, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and illustrated storybooks. The company promises additional announcements leading up to the July celebration.

Originally launching on July 7, 2000 for PlayStation, FFIX has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game saw re-releases including a 2012 Japanese collector's edition, mobile remasters in 2016, and modern console ports between 2017-2019.

Remake Rumors Resurface Alongside Dormant Anime Project

The anniversary announcement has reignited discussions about a potential FFIX remake, especially following the success of Final Fantasy VII's reimagining. Voted Japan's 4th favorite FF title in NHK's 2019 poll, FFIX's enduring popularity makes it a prime candidate for modernization.

Meanwhile, the status remains unclear for the announced FFIX anime adaptation "The Black Mages' Legacy." First revealed in 2021, the series was planned to explore Vivi's descendants a decade after the game's events. Production partner Cyber Group Studios' 2024 bankruptcy created uncertainty, though potential buyers have expressed interest in reviving the project.

The anniversary website makes no specific reference to either project, leaving fans to speculate about which of the "various projects" might materialize alongside the confirmed merchandise.
