Disney's Snow White Remake Struggles to Break Even After Slow Box Office Start
Disney's latest live-action remake, *Snow White*, directed by Marc Webb, known for *The Amazing Spider-Man* films, has experienced a disappointing start at the box office. According to Comscore, the film managed to pull in $43 million domestically during its opening weekend, marking the second highest debut of 2025, only surpassed by *Captain America: Brave New World*. However, this figure falls short of expectations and trails behind the $45 million domestic opening of the 2019 live-action *Dumbo*. To put things into perspective, previous Disney remakes like *The Lion King* (2019), *Beauty and the Beast* (2017), *The Jungle Book* (2016), and *The Little Mermaid* (2023) all boasted opening weekend totals exceeding $100 million domestically.
The international box office for *Snow White* also reflected a lackluster performance, with a weekend haul of $44.3 million, bringing the global total to $87.3 million as per Comscore's estimates. Given the reported production budget of over $250 million, not including marketing expenses, *Snow White* faces a steep challenge to reach profitability.
Despite the initial setback, there's a glimmer of hope for *Snow White*. Disney's *Mufasa: The Lion King*, a prequel to the 2019 *The Lion King* remake, started with a modest $35.4 million domestically but eventually amassed over $717 million worldwide. Disney is banking on *Snow White*, starring Rachel Zegler as the titular character and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, to follow a similar path and become a sleeper hit.
Meanwhile, *Captain America: Brave New World* continues to face scrutiny over its performance, having grossed $400.8 million globally after six weekends, with $192.1 million from the domestic market and $208.7 million internationally.
IGN's review of *Snow White* awarded it a 7/10, commending the film for its meaningful adaptation of the 1937 animated classic, rather than merely replicating it.
