Will Capcom Produce Another Devil May Cry Title?

Highly Probable, Even Without Itsuno Leading

Will There Be A Devil May Cry 6?

Devil May Cry has just lost its veteran champion and director, Hideaki Itsuno, who left Capcom after over 30 years and five months with the company. Itsuno directed DMC 3, 4, and 5 (we seldom mention the second), and with his departure, does this eliminate the possibility of a sixth entry in the acclaimed hack-and-slash series? Contrary to widespread speculation, it is quite likely that DMC 6 will still be developed—and may already be in progress—just not under Itsuno's leadership.

Will There Be A Devil May Cry 6?

Undeniably, the Devil May Cry series has experienced both successes and challenges. The original game was initially conceived as a Resident Evil title, the second installment faced issues that Itsuno addressed late in development, the fourth game had a troubled production cycle, and the divisive DmC reboot introduced us to "El Donte." However, following each setback, the franchise consistently managed to recover and improve. DMC1 became an unexpected hit, Itsuno famously sought redemption with the exceptional DMC3 after DMC2's poor reception, DMC4 received a Special Edition nearly a decade later to address its shortcomings, and DMC5 emerged triumphantly after the reboot underperformed.

Will There Be A Devil May Cry 6?

Many perceive Itsuno's exit as the next downturn in the series, or even the end of Devil May Cry as we know it. Yet this assumption couldn't be further from the truth. DMC remains one of Capcom's most popular, commercially successful, and cherished franchises—a remarkable feat considering the Japanese giant's extensive catalog spanning decades. It would be a significant oversight for Capcom not to leverage the massive resurgence DMC has enjoyed in recent years, especially following DMC5's release. The game's Special Edition further fueled its cult status, popularizing Vergil and his anthem "Bury the Light," arguably one of the most streamed tracks in gaming history. As of this writing, the song boasts over 110 million plays on Spotify, plus an unofficial YouTube upload with an impressive 132 million views.

In recent developments, the franchise is also breaking into the mainstream with a fully animated Netflix series, starring the charismatic devil hunter Dante showcasing his spectacular swordplay and gun-slinging prowess in all its glory!
