Dynasty Warriors: Origins Battle of Hulao Gate Guide
The Battle of Hulao Gate is the final stage in Chapter 2 of *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, where your primary objective is to defeat Dong Zhuo. This mission will demand a significant effort and likely more time than any previous mission.
When the battle begins, navigate your way around the four enemy bases located in the bottom right of the map. After conquering two of these, a cutscene will trigger, showcasing a mounted cavalry charging down from a hill towards the bases. Don't let this distract you from your strategy. As you proceed to take over the bases, you'll naturally encounter and defeat this cavalry. If you manage to defeat their commander, Zhang Liao, you'll earn the twin pike weapon, enhancing your arsenal.
Once you've secured all the bases, you'll be ready to assault Hulao Gate, marking your first major confrontation with Dong Zhuo's forces. This fight will be chaotic, but your focus should be on protecting Cao Cao until he unleashes his Grand Tactic. Once activated, many of the enemy defenses will crumble, paving the way for you to advance further towards Hulao Gate.
Lu Bu Appears
At this critical juncture, Dong Zhuo will deploy Lu Bu to the frontline. It's crucial not to engage Lu Bu directly; a one-on-one battle with him will be disastrous. Instead, focus on eliminating enemy officers around the edges of the battlefield to maintain your morale, which Lu Bu's presence will severely deplete.
Lu Bu will eventually move towards your main base to take on Yuan Shao. Resist the urge to pursue him, adhering to the core strategy of *Dynasty Warriors*—never chase Lu Bu. Liu Bei and his forces will attempt to delay Lu Bu, buying you time to defeat Dong Zhuo. This sets a time limit for your mission. Liu Bei's forces can't hold Lu Bu off indefinitely, so ensure you're close to defeating Dong Zhuo when you're notified of their retreat, or Lu Bu will overrun Yuan Shao, ending the mission.
Go After Dong Zhuo
With Lu Bu occupied, take the opportunity to resupply with meat buns from any conquered base if needed, then return to the gate. While Cao Cao prepares for a charge, focus on capturing the bases to the north and west. Once you have all three squads ready to attack Dong Zhuo and you're fully healed, enter the closest commander's circle and charge into battle.
You'll face an overwhelming number of enemies, with Dong Zhuo launching a Grand Tactic of fireball attacks. To counter this, destroy the two front catapults. If possible, activate Musou Rage to break through the wall of soldiers blocking your path to the catapults. After clearing the soldiers and officers around them, your forces should be able to demolish the catapults, halting Dong Zhuo's tactic.
As you advance, Dong Zhuo will initiate another Grand Tactic. This time, you'll need to defeat one of his officers to stop it. Head up the right stairs to confront the officer, but be prepared for an ambush by Diaochan, who has sided with Dong Zhuo. If feasible, duel Diaochan to avoid being overwhelmed by fighting both her and the officer simultaneously.
Once you've thwarted this Grand Tactic, the path to Dong Zhuo should be clear. With high morale, your forces should easily overpower his remaining troops. Even if Dian Wei initiates a Grand Tactic, it will further ease your path to victory. It's advisable to defeat Dong Zhuo conventionally rather than dueling him, as by this stage, his forces will be significantly weakened.
And that's how you triumph in the Battle of Hulao Gate in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*! The game is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
