Chris Evans Confirms Departure from Avengers Universe
Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors
Despite reports suggesting his return, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his comeback alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who initially told Esquire that his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently spoke with Evans, who confirmed his retirement from the MCU, stating, "I’m happily retired."
Evans' comments to Esquire directly addressed the recurring rumors: "That’s not true, though...it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no. Happily retired."
While Evans has returned to the superhero genre in a comedic capacity as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, his statement firmly closes the door on a significant return to his iconic Captain America role.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors as Kang, the planned successor to Thanos, after his conviction for assault and harassment. This has led to speculation about the return of original Avengers, fueled by the announcement of Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Doctor Doom as the new main antagonist.
Although Benedict Cumberbatch confirmed Doctor Strange's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, he will feature prominently in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, potentially including Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter.
