Abandoned Batman: Arkham Knight Sequel Art Reveals Grizzled Bruce Wayne

Author : Simon Update : Jan 07,2026

Concept art from a long-canceled Batman Arkham Knight sequel starring Damian Wayne as the Dark Knight has emerged online, providing the clearest glimpse yet of an elderly Bruce Wayne.

Known internally as Project Sabbath, the game was in development at Warner Bros. Games Montreal—the studio behind Batman Arkham Origins—following the 2015 release of Arkham Knight. It would have centered on two Batmen: father and son.

However, Warner Bros. ultimately shelved the project. WB Games Montreal later shifted its focus to 2022's poorly received Gotham Knights, a title that featured no version of Batman at all.

At the time, Project Sabbath was positioned as Warner Bros.' next major Batman game, while Rocksteady explored concepts with other characters. Rocksteady eventually circled back to its own version of Batman (in a manner of speaking) with its ill-fated release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

New images shared by a former WB Games Montreal artist on ArtStation now showcase a youthful Damian Wayne, a grizzled and bearded Bruce Wayne, along with concept designs for Killer Croc and Huntress.

It's still unclear whether this game would have been a firm part of the Arkhamverse canon. Some design choices—particularly a significantly different Killer Croc—suggest it may have offered a fresh interpretation. That said, similar design shifts occurred with Poison Ivy in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is definitely part of the Arkham universe. And WB Games Montreal previously developed Batman Arkham Origins, a prequel widely accepted as canon within Rocksteady's core trilogy.

This isn’t the first time concept art from the game has appeared online. In 2021, another former WB Games Montreal developer posted images of Damian Wayne in his Batsuit—a sleek design with a red Bat-Signal emblem on the chest.

Those earlier designs also depicted the same bearded, older Bruce Wayne, though only in his full suit, leaving his face hidden. Even so, they implied that the elder Bruce would have occasionally donned the Batsuit during his retirement.

Following the release of Gotham Knights and its support work on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, WB Games Montreal underwent downsizing in December 2024, resulting in nearly 100 job losses. Rocksteady's cooperative game featuring Batman’s allies was a commercial failure, though the developer is now reportedly working on a new single-player Batman title.

Perhaps this upcoming project will finally deliver the Bruce and Damian Wayne game that fans have long awaited.
