Author : Aiden Update : Mar 14,2025

Mastering Minecraft survival begins with the basics, and few skills are as crucial as building a campfire. It's far more than just a pretty decoration; it's a vital tool from day one.

What is a Campfire?

A campfire is a multi-functional block: it illuminates, cooks food, acts as a signal fire, and even has decorative and mechanical uses. It requires no fuel, and its smoke provides a useful landmark. You can walk through it without taking damage (unless you stand directly on it), but it harms mobs and players who remain on it for too long. Besides the standard campfire, there's also the soul campfire, with a blue flame, that repels piglins and provides slightly less light.

Campfires can be extinguished with water or a shovel and relit with flint and steel, lava, or fire arrows.

How to Create a Campfire

Creating a campfire is simpler than surviving your first night! You need three logs (any type), three sticks, and one piece of coal (or charcoal).

Place the logs in the bottom row of your crafting grid, the sticks in a triangle above, and the coal in the center. You now have a self-sustaining light and heat source, unaffected by rain.

Unfortunately, you can't magically start a fire with sticks in Minecraft.

Main Campfire Functions

The Minecraft campfire is a versatile survival tool:

  • Lighting and Mob Protection: It provides light comparable to a torch, deterring many mobs. However, creepers remain a threat, so use fences for extra protection.
  • Cooking: Cook up to four pieces of food at once without fuel. Be mindful; cooked food falls to the ground.
  • Signal Fire: Smoke rises, and placing hay above it increases visibility, making it a great landmark.
  • Mob Trap: Prolonged contact deals damage, useful for trapping mobs (or friends!).
  • Decoration: Extinguish it with a shovel for a decorative hearth texture.

Extra Features and Life Hacks

  • Smoke Beacon: Hay above a campfire creates a tall smoke plume (up to 25 blocks).
  • Safe Honey Harvesting: Place a campfire (even extinguished) under a beehive for safe honey collection.
  • Extinguished Campfire Decoration: Use a shovel to extinguish and create decorative textures.
  • Automatic Mob Trap: Deals 1 damage per second, leaving drops intact (great for farms).
  • Fire-Safe Campfire: Unlike lava or fire, it won't ignite nearby structures.
  • Controllable Fire: Extinguish and relight as needed.

Campfire vs. Soul Campfire

The soul campfire has a blue flame, emits slightly less light, and repels piglins. It's useful in the Nether but less bright than a regular campfire. The regular campfire is generally preferred for decoration and brighter light.

Effective Campfire Use in Survival

Strategic campfire placement near your base provides light and mob deterrence (though fences are still recommended against creepers). Use it for fuel-free cooking, safe honey harvesting, and creative decoration. It can also be a key component in mob traps.
