Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has released its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled Patch 8, the last major update for the game. This final update has sparked a significant increase in player count, propelling BG3 just outside of Steam's top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, BG3 now boasts over 169,000 players at the time of this writing.

Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, took to X (formerly Twitter) on April 22 to comment on the player surge post-Patch 8. He highlighted the game's robust mod support, which allows Larian to shift focus toward their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative horizons.

In light of this shift, D&D owners Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, initially announced in a November 2024 Steam blog post, has been eagerly awaited. This update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play capabilities, and a host of other features. The developers have provided a comprehensive breakdown of the patch's contents on the BG3 website. Compared to their earlier post in November 2024, the final patch notes feature an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished conclusion to BG3.

Larian Studios has invested significantly in enhancing BG3, evident in the numerous fixes and updates included in this final version. Although this marks their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the modding community.
