10 Nintendo DS & GBA Gems Now on Switch

Author : Jack Update : Feb 05,2025

A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While the Nintendo Switch Online app boasts a substantial Game Boy Advance library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. Ten games are featured – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS – presented without specific ranking.

Game Boy Advance

Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration offers a compelling alternative, providing an interesting comparison and a potentially more streamlined experience. A fun title even for those not typically drawn to shooters.

Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)

As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action game, while possessing some initial rough edges, lays the foundation for an excellent series. A perfect starting point for newcomers to the franchise.

Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)

A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy, set within a cleverly conceived virtual world. Although later installments saw diminishing returns, the original offers considerable enjoyment.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)

From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its engaging soul-collecting system and fun gameplay make the grinding enjoyable. A standout third-party GBA title.

Nintendo DS

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)

Initially a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, leading to continued appearances across generations. Interestingly, a previously unreleased GBA version is slated for release soon.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)

Arguably a GBA title by origin (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)

From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features unique gameplay mechanics. As a ghost, players utilize their abilities to save others and unravel a mystery surrounding their own death. A captivating and well-received title.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)

A top-tier Nintendo DS game, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS. A truly exceptional game.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

From the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls compared to its original touch-based controls. However, all three DS Castlevania games in this collection are highly recommended.

Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)

While the Etrian Odyssey series is intrinsically linked to the DS/3DS, this adaptation works well. Each game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
