Preparation for Children Going to the Hospital

"HC And - When mother or father has cancer" is a collaborative project developed by the Oncology Department R at H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, Odense University Hospital, along with hospitalized children, their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication.

Designed specifically for children aged 4-7, HC And serves as a vital tool to prepare and alleviate anxiety in young children who are unfamiliar with many hospital-related terms. This resource introduces young children, their families, and friends to the general course of cancer treatment at the hospital.

The information in HC And is delivered through a child's voice and engaging animations, utilizing the "Learning through play" approach on tablets, mobile phones, or touch screens. This method aligns with how children in this age group learn and process information, recognizing the importance of play and concrete details.

For children who are relatives of cancer patients, the influx of information can be overwhelming. HC And addresses this by presenting content in short, manageable sequences tailored to a child's perspective, making it an ideal starting point for newcomers.

The material includes 7 staged stories that address common questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Hospital staff can leverage HC And as an educational tool to establish a shared understanding with the child, enhancing communication and support.
