Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Solo Path, Avoiding Avengers and X-Men

Author : Madison Update : May 16,2025

Ryan Reynolds has sparked speculation about the future of his iconic character, Deadpool, by casting doubt on the possibility of the 'Merc with a Mouth' joining either the Avengers or the X-Men. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that." This comes despite the character's clear desire to join the Avengers, as showcased in the highly successful "Deadpool & Wolverine."

The excitement around "Deadpool & Wolverine" led to speculation that Marvel Studios might integrate Deadpool into the larger MCU, particularly with next year's "Avengers: Doomsday." However, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the recent cast reveal for "Avengers: Doomsday," which instead featured a strong presence of veteran X-Men actors such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. This has fueled rumors that "Avengers: Doomsday" might secretly be an "Avengers vs. X-Men" movie.

While Reynolds ruled out a formal promotion to the Avengers or X-Men for Deadpool, he hinted at the possibility of a surprise cameo appearance, similar to Wesley Snipes' well-received cameo as Blade in "Deadpool & Wolverine." Reynolds suggested that such a role might be more fitting for the character.

Looking ahead, Reynolds revealed he is currently writing a new project involving an "ensemble" but remained tight-lipped about the details. He emphasized his preference for Deadpool to remain isolated, which could mean another standalone Deadpool film featuring numerous cameos, similar to its predecessor. Potential returnees might include Channing Tatum as Gambit, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, and Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney/X-23.

As for "Avengers: Doomsday," beyond the confirmed cast, details remain scarce. Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism that the film would recapture the classic Marvel magic. Other cast members like Paul Rudd and Joseph Quinn have also shared their excitement. However, a recent set photo leak has stirred concern among fans, particularly regarding the fate of the X-Men. Additionally, speculation about Oscar Isaac's involvement as Moon Knight has intensified following his withdrawal from the Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling changes.

Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has confirmed that the "Avengers: Doomsday" cast reveal was not exhaustive, hinting at more surprises to come. This leaves fans eagerly anticipating what the future holds for both Deadpool and the broader MCU.
