"Nintendo Switch 2 Supports NFC, Likely Compatible with Amiibo"

Author : Scarlett Update : May 14,2025

Recent Federal Communication Commission (FCC) filings for the Nintendo Switch 2 have revealed that the next-generation console will support Near Field Communication (NFC), suggesting that Amiibo figures will likely be compatible with the new system. The NFC feature, crucial for using Amiibo, is set to be located in the right Joy-Con, just as it was with the original Switch. This raises an exciting question for fans: will the Switch 2 support the existing Amiibo collection, unlocking in-game content as before?

Beyond NFC, the filings confirm that the Switch 2 can be charged via either its bottom or a new top USB-C port, a feature that was anticipated following the console's official reveal. In terms of connectivity, the Switch 2 will upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks, supporting up to 80MHz of bandwidth, an improvement over the original Switch's Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). However, there is no mention of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E, as noted by The Verge.

The Switch 2 maintains a maximum rating of 15V, but the filings also reference an AC adapter capable of reaching up to 20V, leaving the actual charging speed a mystery for now.

In other developments, a Nintendo patent hinted that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers might be attachable upside down, utilizing magnets instead of the rails found on the original Switch. This design could allow for greater flexibility in button placement and potentially introduce new gameplay mechanics. If implemented, this feature might be fully detailed at the upcoming Nintendo Direct event, scheduled for April 2 at 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time.

The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be on the horizon, with speculation pointing to a launch window between June and September. This speculation is fueled by ongoing hands-on events planned until June and a statement from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon, indicating a release before September.

The Switch 2 was introduced earlier in January with a trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility and the inclusion of a second USB-C port. However, many details, including the functionality of a new mysterious Joy-Con button and additional game titles, remain undisclosed. The theory about the Joy-Con functioning as a mouse has gained some traction among enthusiasts.
