Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The creative team behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the film's most humorous scenes drew inspiration from The NeverEnding Story. In this particular scene, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation where he must ride on Jason Momoa's character, Garrett, due to having only enough Elytra wings for Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's character, Henry. The scene showcases Steve's comedic struggle to stay atop Garrett, preventing a fall from hundreds of feet. This moment, while entertaining, was more than just a bid for laughs.

Play"We definitely wanted to capture a Falkor moment from The Neverending Story, aiming for something majestic and beautiful that quickly turns chaotic," explained A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious during the breaks between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on top of Jason in this complex rig, and he started singing The NeverEnding Story theme, treating Jason like he was riding Falkor."

This scene is a delightful nod to Jack Black's role as Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3, and it allowed Jason Momoa to play a significant part in its creation.

"I had a hand in writing that scene, and Jack was all in for it," Momoa shared with a laugh. "After Top Gun: Maverick hit theaters, I wanted to incorporate a stunt where I'd hit the brakes and Jack would slide off. We were brainstorming at the hotel, and it was hilarious. We managed to include it in the movie, and it turned out fantastic."

"I'm not sure if it made the final cut because there were several versions of the scene, but it could have easily been rated R," Jack Black mentioned. "Ultimately, we opted for a family-friendly version!"

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa said. "I was dying, man. I was dying."
