Karl Urban Debuts as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2
Excitement is building as we gear up for the next installment of the Mortal Kombat film series, with a fresh look at one of its iconic characters: Johnny Cage. Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, has unveiled a striking poster featuring Karl Urban, known for his roles in The Boys and Judge Dredd, as the flamboyant Hollywood star and fighter, Johnny Cage. The poster cleverly mimics a promotional image for a fictitious Johnny Cage film, complete with dramatic visuals of two motorcycles leaping from flames.
Mortal Kombat 2 follows directly from the 2021 reboot, which introduced audiences to Lewis Tan's Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada's Scorpion, and Joe Taslim's Sub-Zero. Joining the cast for the sequel, Karl Urban is accompanied by new faces such as Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.
The original movie revolved around Cole Young's journey into the brutal world of Mortal Kombat and his discovery of the intense history between Scorpion and Sub-Zero. While plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, the rich tapestry of storylines from the Mortal Kombat video game series offers numerous possibilities for the film's direction.
Initially planned for a theatrical release, the first Mortal Kombat movie was diverted to HBO Max due to the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, fans can look forward to experiencing Mortal Kombat 2 in theaters, with its release scheduled for October 24, 2025.
In our review of the first film, we awarded it a score of 7, praising it as a "spectacular display of blood, guts, and effects-heavy martial arts battles."
