A former Rockstar veteran, Obbe Vermeij, has weighed in on recent rumors suggesting that a re-release of Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA 4) for the latest generation of consoles might be on the horizon. Vermeij, who served as a technical director at Rockstar Games from 1995 to 2009 and worked on GTA 4, expressed his belief that the game should be remastered. He emphasized that GTA 4 is a great game and pointed out the success of recent remasters, such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, as a reason to consider updating it.

Vermeij also shared his admiration for Niko Bellic, the protagonist of GTA 4, calling him the best protagonist in any GTA game. He speculated that if a remaster were to happen, Rockstar might port the game to the latest version of their Rage engine, which powers their current titles.

The rumors about a potential GTA 4 re-release originated from Tez2, a well-known figure within the GTA community for leaking Rockstar information. Tez2 hinted that a modern port of GTA 4 could be released this year and suggested that this might be why Rockstar recently shut down a GTA 5 Liberty City Mod.

However, it's crucial to note that Rockstar has not officially indicated any plans to re-release GTA 4. Given their current focus on the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), a re-release of GTA 4 would be surprising. The development of GTA 6 is a massive undertaking, and adding a GTA 4 remaster to their workload might be beyond Rockstar's scope, even with their substantial resources.

If Rockstar were to proceed with a GTA 4 re-release, they might opt to have an external studio handle the port, similar to how they managed the port of Red Dead Redemption. However, the timing seems off, especially considering GTA 6's planned release in fall 2025. Launching both a GTA 4 remaster and GTA 6 in the same window could potentially split the audience's attention away from GTA 6.

In other GTA news, some fans speculate that Liberty City, the setting of GTA 4 and inspired by New York City, might appear in GTA 6, either at launch or as post-launch DLC. GTA 6 is set in the fictional state of Leonida, which includes Vice City, based on Miami.
