Destiny 2 Year of Prophecy: Essential Guardian Guide

Author : Nora Update : May 20,2025

Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has unveiled an exciting lineup for Destiny 2 under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy," featuring two new expansions and significant updates to the core game that will cater to both paying and free players.

The "Year of Prophecy" marks a new era with four major content updates, split between two paid expansions and two free updates, ensuring a rich experience for everyone.

Kicking things off is Rite of the Nine, a free update already available to all players. This update offers a fresh take on dungeon diving, appealing to both veterans and newcomers. The familiar dungeons—Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep—will feature unique twists, reintroducing players to Orin and showcasing refreshed dungeon weapons.

On July 15, the first paid expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches. This expansion marks the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the enigmatic Nine. Players will encounter new characters, including ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora. The expansion introduces the new destination, Kepler, inspired by Destiny 2’s challenging dungeon designs and encouraging deep exploration and player-driven discovery. Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out major core game innovations. These include revised armor and gear systems to enhance buildcrafting opportunities and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This screen allows players to choose between various ops, including Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops, tailored for players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. Players can customize activities with 50 new modifiers for deeper gameplay customization and curated activity rotations to keep the game fresh.

This news comes after Bungie's significant layoffs in July 2024, affecting 220 staff members, and follows another round of layoffs less than a year prior. Despite these challenges, Bungie remains committed to delivering high-quality content for Destiny 2 players.

In addition to Destiny 2, Bungie is also working on the Marathon reboot, which was revealed in May 2023. Recent hands-on previews suggest that Marathon could satisfy the long-standing demand for a new Bungie PvP experience, with a release planned for September on PC and consoles.
