BG3's Patch 7 Brings In Over A Million Mods Shortly After Rollout
Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
The release of Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7 has ignited a modding frenzy. Within 24 hours of its September 5th launch, over one million mods were installed, according to Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke. This figure has since exploded, surpassing three million installs, as reported by mod.io founder Scott Reismanis. Vincke himself described the modding community's response as "pretty big."
Patch 7's impact extends beyond the sheer volume of mods. It introduced significant new content, including alternative evil endings, enhanced split-screen functionality, and a crucial addition: Larian's official Mod Manager. This integrated tool simplifies mod browsing, installation, and management directly within the game.
The existing modding tools, accessible via Steam, empower creators to craft their own narratives using Larian's Osiris scripting language. These tools facilitate custom script loading, basic debugging, and direct mod publishing.
Cross-Platform Modding on the Horizon
PC Gamer highlighted a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked," featuring a level editor and reactivated functionalities from Larian's editor. While Larian previously expressed reservations about providing unrestricted access to all development tools, Vincke confirmed the studio's commitment to cross-platform modding. He acknowledged the complexity of this undertaking, particularly concerning console compatibility, but assured players that PC support will come first, followed by consoles after necessary testing and submission processes.
Beyond modding, Patch 7 delivers a refined gaming experience with UI improvements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance enhancements. With further updates planned, Larian's continued support for the modding community is anticipated.
