The Witcher 4: everything we know so far

The Witcher saga continues! Nearly a decade after the critically acclaimed Witcher 3 captivated players, the first trailer for The Witcher 4 has dropped, introducing Ciri as the new protagonist.

As many fans remember, Ciri is Geralt's adopted daughter. With Geralt's trilogy concluded, the spotlight shifts to the next generation. The teaser depicts Ciri intervening in a village gripped by a superstitious ritual—sacrificing a young woman to appease a monster. Ciri's intervention reveals a far more complex situation than initially apparent.

An official release date for The Witcher 4 remains elusive. Considering the development times of The Witcher 3 (3.5-4 years) and Cyberpunk 2077 (even longer), and the early stage of production evident in the trailer, a 3-4 year wait is a reasonable expectation.

While platform announcements are pending, the anticipated timeframe suggests a current-generation-only release. However, no platform exclusivity has been confirmed. A simultaneous launch on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC is likely. Unlike The Witcher 3's Switch port, a Switch version seems improbable for this iteration, though a potential Switch 2 release remains a possibility.

Gameplay details are scarce, but CD Projekt Red is unlikely to drastically alter the core gameplay mechanics of their flagship franchise. The CGI trailer hints at returning elements like potions, signs, and familiar phrases. A new addition may be Ciri's chain, used for both trapping monsters and channeling magic.

Adding to the anticipation, Doug Cockle (Geralt's voice actor) previously confirmed Geralt's presence in the game, albeit in a supporting role, fueling speculation of a mentor-like figure for Ciri.
