Application Description
Unlock the power of OBD2 diagnostics with Piston, where your car's diagnostic information is effortlessly accessible right from your mobile device. Is your Check Engine Light (MIL) on? No worries! With Piston, transform your smartphone into a comprehensive car scanner to read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and the associated Freeze Frame data. This feature is invaluable for pinpointing and resolving issues swiftly.
To get started, you'll need an ELM327 based adapter, available in Bluetooth or WiFi variants, which connects to your vehicle's OBD2 socket. Piston simplifies the connection process, guiding you through each step. You can find these instructions on the Home page after your initial installation or in the Settings menu at any time.
With Piston, you gain the ability to:
- Read and clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as defined by the OBD2 standard.
- Examine Freeze Frame data, capturing a snapshot of sensor data at the moment an issue was detected by the ECU.
- Access real-time data from various vehicle sensors.
- Check the status of Readiness Monitors to ensure your emission control systems are functioning correctly.
- Save the DTCs you've read in a local history for future reference.
- Log into your account to store DTCs in the cloud for easy access across devices.
- View charts of sensor readouts for a detailed analysis.
- Export real-time sensor data to a file for further examination.
- Verify your car's VIN number effortlessly.
- Explore detailed information about your vehicle's ECUs, including the OBD protocol and PIDs number.
Some of these advanced features are part of our Premium package, available through a one-time in-app purchase, unlocking all premium functionalities without the need for subscriptions!
Please note that Piston requires a separate ELM327 based device, either Bluetooth or WiFi, to function as a car scanner. It's fully compatible with both OBD-II (also known as OBDII or OBD2) and EOBD standards.
Vehicles sold in the USA since 1996 are mandated to support the OBD2 standard. In the European Union, EOBD has been required for petrol vehicles since 2001 and diesel vehicles since 2004. For Australia and New Zealand, OBD2 has been mandatory for petrol cars since 2006 and diesel cars since 2007.
Important: Piston can only access the data that your vehicle supports and provides through the OBD2 standard.
