Der PC-Start von Marvels Spider-Man 2 auf Steam und der Epic Games Store mussten mangelnde Vorbestellungs- oder Vor-Download-Optionen haben, was zu einem massiven Download von 140 GB führte. Dieses Fehlen eines Zugriffs vor der Veröffentlichung hinderte überraschenderweise nicht, dass Hacker das Spiel innerhalb einer Stunde nach seiner Veröffentlichung knacken. Die relativ einfachen Anti-Piraterie-Maßnahmen des Spiels erwiesen sich als unwirksam.

Die zurückhaltende Marketingkampagne von Sony und die verspätete Veröffentlichung der Systemanforderungen trugen ferner zur Situation bei. Trotzdem hat Spider-Man 2 bereits einen respektablen siebten Platz unter den größten Dampfveröffentlichungen von Sony gesichert, die hinter Titeln wie God of War, Horizon und Days Gone zurückblieben.
