Callbreak is typically played with four players using a standard 52-card deck. The cards rank from highest to lowest as A-K-Q-J-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2 across all suits. A game can consist of 3 or 5 rounds. The first dealer is determined by drawing a card; the player with the lowest card deals first, distributing cards clockwise. The player to the dealer's right leads the first trick. Any card can be led, and players must follow suit. If unable to follow suit, a player must play a spade (the trump suit) if they have one that can beat any played spades.

Failure to meet your call results in the called number being subtracted from your score.

A round must be re-dealt if a player receives no spades (trump cards) or no face cards (J, Q, K, A) of any suit.
